We drove up to the Sam Houston Memorial Museum and Republic of Texas Presidential Library in Huntsville, Texas as they commemorated the 160th anniversary of General Sam Houston’s passing. Mike Acosta speaks with museum Director Derrick Birdsall about the museum, the Battle of San Jacinto, Sam Houston’s passing, and the ceremonies planned to commemorate the special anniversary. You’ll see a clip of recreation of a Masonic funeral held in the rotunda of the museum in honor of Sam Houston and the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe recreates a special scene at the steps of Sam Houston’s Steamboat House, where ancestors sang to Houston just before his death in 1863.

Lisbet Marquez and Mike Acosta also visited NASA’s Johnson Space Center, where Mike spoke with Flight Director Ed Van Cise from the Christopher J. Kraft Mission Control Center. Van Cise began his NASA career as a co-operative education student before attaining various full-time job positions. He spent more than 6,000 hours as a Flight Controller before becoming NASA’s 78th certified human spaceflight Flight Director in 2009. NASA Flight Directors are responsible for the operations and safety of any NASA human spaceflight mission. His call sign is “Carbon Flight” and has overseen operations with the Boeing Starliner and the International Space Station. They discussed the legacy of a Flight Director’s career, how and why Van Cise decided he wanted to work for NASA, and the dangers of space exploration.
