Meet: Lisbet Marquez

Welcome to my page on Houston City Beat. My name is Lisbet Marquez, Founder and El Presidente of Houston City Beat. Below is my story of how Houston City Beat started. I hope you enjoy it.

Back in 2020 I found myself making a career transition into marketing. Once the big C hit Houston, I remember being alone with my thoughts and asking the Universe for an idea of something big to do. I wanted to be an entrepreneur - a successful entrepreneur for myself and for my kids. The Universe always delivers so the idea came to me as a name and nothing more. Imagine a freight train barreling past you, that was what I felt at that moment and Houston City Beat was born. Although the site started out as a directory, it stands today as a testimony to the power of determination, collaboration, and a love for the city that we live in.

Many people openly share about their successes in life but very few are open to speaking about their failures. Have you ever worked so hard and failed so miserably that it hurts your physical existence? That sums up my entrepreneurial journey up until 2023. I stand here today to be a testimony that working on various projects at the same time is a recipe for disaster. I was trying to work on Houston City Beat while trying to grow the marketing for various other companies I established in the home services space. At the end of 2022, all I had in front of me was a long list of failed attempts and the Houston City Beat website on life support.

I was so busy dividing my time into a million other parts that I didn't have time or the experience in media to create a better vision for Houston City Beat. I had almost given up on the website. It wasn't until I met someone in July of 2022 that everything changed.

As important as it is to be a catalyst for what you are passionate about, it's equally as important to allow others to enter your life and be your catalyst for massive change. Houston City Beat was reborn with a new quest for life thanks to being open to seeing possibilities from a new perspective. Mike Acosta was that catalyst for a new Houston City Beat.

If you ask Mike or me about Houston City Beat, we'll tell you that it reflects the collaborative spirit of our city and a reflection of our love for Houston. We'll tell you that we are storytellers of Houston and within the pages of the website, you will come across stories, podcasts, episodes, and even art that you can wear or display in your home created for and by Houstonians.

I am proud of the website as it stands today. I am proud of the creativity and hard work we have both put into this site to make it what it is today. Ahead of us is a great opportunity to continue building a grassroots media company and pour into it our love for the city we live in and for each other.

You can see our collaboration within the diverse group of Houstonians that together make up what is Houston City Beat. From the Collaborative Writers, the Podcaster, the Ambassadors, and Business Partners, we are a diverse representation of the City we all Love!

When I'm not actively working on Houston City Beat, I'm giving back to the business community, serving as a mentor to entrepreneurs and helping to create job opportunities for people in and around the Greater Houston Area.
