Saddle up! Sam Houston Trail Riders Stop in Tomball
TOMBALL, TX - FEB 25, 2025 - Today, the Sam Houston Trail Riders made a special stop in Tomball on their way to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Parade this weekend. Riding in from Montgomery, the Sam Houston Trail is now 71 years old. The trail ride tradition began in 1952, when four men from Brenham, Texas, started the first one. By 1953, the Salt Grass Trail Ride had 80 participants, and just a year later, that number grew to 800.
Over 3,000 riders from across Texas and Louisiana come together for this annual event. A total of 11 Trail Rides participate in the annual parade in Downtown Houston, covering an impressive 1,300 miles collectively. The Valley Lodge Trail Ride, the shortest of them all, begins in Brookshire, Texas, spanning 75 miles.
Led by dedicated Trail Bosses, many riders use rescued horses, with the Texas Independence Trail Ride featuring three century-old wagons. These rides are a family affair, bringing together generations, and many also offer scholarships to local students while sharing a rich history. The journey continues as they head towards their campsite at Memorial Park in Houston, celebrating Texas spirit and community.
