Fashion Meets Space: Prada and Houston based Axiom Space Unveil Cutting-Edge Spacesuit for NASA’s Artemis III Mission

HOUSTON, TX - In an exciting partnership that underscores Houston’s role in space exploration, luxury fashion brand Prada and commercial space company Axiom Space have unveiled the designs for a cutting-edge spacesuit to be worn during NASA’s Artemis III moon mission. Presented at the International Astronautical Congress in Milan, the suits feature a sleek white design with stone-gray patches on the elbows and knees, blending elements reminiscent of the Apollo moon missions from 1969 to 1972. While Prada’s branding is subtle, striking red lines pay homage to its Linea Rossa sub-brand, adding a signature touch to this high-tech gear.

These advanced spacesuits are engineered for peak performance, allowing astronauts to conduct spacewalks for up to eight hours daily, thanks to specially designed boots. Constructed from a reflective white material, the suits provide protection against extreme lunar temperatures and dust, while offering improved mobility compared to the Apollo 17 suits, the last used on the moon in 1972. Prada’s expertise in textiles ensures the perfect balance between functionality and style.

The design of these spacesuits plays a vital role in astronaut performance, directly affecting mobility, safety, comfort, and overall functionality. A well-crafted suit enhances flexibility, allowing astronauts to efficiently complete tasks in the harsh environment of space. Equipped with advanced life support systems, the suits regulate oxygen levels, remove carbon dioxide, and control temperature—key factors in maintaining astronaut health during missions.

Comfort is essential, especially given the long hours astronauts will spend in their suits. Thoughtfully designed for proper fit, insulation, and ergonomics, the suits help minimize fatigue and boost efficiency. Integrated communication systems ensure clear audio transmission and allow astronauts to stay connected with mission control and each other, keeping the Houston team in constant contact.

Practicality is also a focus, with pockets and attachment points providing easy access to tools and equipment. Thermal regulation is critical, and the suits feature insulation and cooling systems to help astronauts manage body temperature in the extreme heat and cold of space.

These gender-neutral, one-size-fits-all suits have been in development for several years. According to Prada Group’s Chief Marketing Officer, Lorenzo Bertelli, discussions for the collaboration began before the COVID-19 pandemic. A dedicated team of about 10 Prada employees has been commuting between Milan and Axiom’s Houston base, further emphasizing the city’s key role in this groundbreaking effort.

NASA’s Artemis III mission, slated for the second half of 2026, aims to mark the first astronaut moon landing since Apollo 17, with the world potentially witnessing a milestone - the first woman to walk on the moon. This collaboration not only fuses fashion and function but also highlights Houston’s continued status as a leader in space exploration and innovation.
