Houston's downtown is undergoing a vibrant transformation, evolving into a world-class street art destination. At the heart of this movement is Street Art for Mankind (SAM), a non-profit organization dedicated to leveraging the power of art to ignite social change. We recently spoke with Audrey Decker, one of the founders of SAM, on "Let's Talk" to discuss their ambitious "Big Art, Bigger Change" murals project and the impact it's having on the city.
SAM, co-founded by Audrey and Thibault Decker, is driven by a deep commitment to creating a child-friendly world, with a primary focus on combating child labor and trafficking. They believe that art can transcend language and cultural barriers, fostering dialogue and inspiring action. SAM also supports vital work on the ground, helping to fund raid and rescue programs initiated by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Kailash Satyarthi and his Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF). By purchasing art or making a donation to SAM, you directly contribute to these crucial programs, helping to liberate children and restore their freedom.
The "Big Art Bigger Change" murals project is an unprecedented series of 50 large-scale murals curated by SAM, featuring a diverse roster of prominent international and local artists. This initiative aims to amplify messages of social and environmental justice, transforming Houston's urban landscape into a powerful platform for awareness and advocacy.
Each mural within the series is inspired by the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, reflecting the rich tapestry of Houston's community and highlighting the tireless efforts of individuals and organizations working to make a difference, both locally and globally. The project is a testament to the collaborative spirit, made possible through a vital partnership with Harris County and Downtown Houston, with additional support from the City of Houston and TotalEnergies.
The project has unfolded in distinct seasons, each showcasing the unique talents of a new wave of artists:
