Howard Sherman, a Houston-based artist with an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas (2006), is a prominent figure in contemporary art. Known for his bold, large-scale canvases and smaller, distilled works on paper, Sherman's style combines cartoon-inspired humor, raw physicality, and a thoughtful integration of various art historical influences. His work often balances abstract mark-making with figuration, evoking portraits, punchlines, or poetic elements.
Sherman's career gained traction early, with a solo traveling exhibition just two years post-MFA and his work featured in museum collections and permanent displays, including Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport. His painting graced the cover of Texas Abstract: Modern/Contemporary and his art has been profiled in New American Paintings and Texas Artists Today. He has participated in residencies and exhibitions worldwide, with recent shows in Berlin and Marfa, Texas.
In 2023, Snap Editions Books published a major monograph on Sherman, featuring essays by prominent curators and critics. Sherman continues to create from his studio in Houston.
