HOUSTON – A large group of University of Houston students took to the streets today, marching from Butler Plaza to Cullen Hall to protest the recent increase in violence and assaults on campus. Their chants of “Campus Safety is way too low, keep the violence far away!” echoed across the university grounds, highlighting the growing concern among the student body.
The protest, organized by students, saw a diverse group of Coogs uniting in their call for change. Among the organizers were student leaders Mina Vuong and Aihanvwa Ale-Opinion, who emphasized the urgent need for increased security measures. "We're committed to securing a safer campus for all," Vuong stated. Ale-Opinion added, "We're demanding action, not just empty promises."

Joining the student leaders was Pamela Hielringer, a student parent who voiced her own anxieties about the campus environment. "As a parent," Hielringer explained, "I'm constantly worried about my child's safety. These recent incidents have made me question the university's commitment to protecting its students."
The recent surge in violence has taken a toll on the student body, eroding trust in the university's ability to ensure their safety. Many students report feeling vulnerable and disillusioned, citing a lack of tangible action following previous promises of increased security. "We've lost our trust," one student, who wished to remain anonymous, told Houston City Beat. "We need more than just words; we need to see real change."
The protest culminated at Cullen Hall, where students plastered their demands on the building's walls. The list included requests for increased lighting, additional security personnel, and improved communication systems. The students are now awaiting a response from University of Houston System Chancellor Renu Khator and the university administration. The future of campus safety, they say, depends on it. Houston City Beat will continue to follow this developing story.
The demands being made by the student-led protestors include the following:
