The Houston Fire Department is mourning the sudden death of one of their own. Fire Chief Thomas Muñoz announced on Wednesday the passing of Captain Aaron Rios, who died at the age of 46 on January 8 following an off-duty medical emergency that occurred over the holidays.
Captain Rios joined the Houston Fire Department in September 2003 and became a Captain in 2017, most recently serving at Station 104/D-shift in Kingwood.
"Captain Rios was a great man by all accounts, and the Houston Fire Department was privileged to benefit from his work," said Chief Muñoz. "My heart breaks for his family, both those at home and his extended family here in the department."
A vigil was held in his honor at HCA Kingwood hospital, attended by over one hundred firefighters and civilians. Funeral arrangements are still pending, and the Firefighter Support Network will assist the Rios family during this time.
“The City of Houston mourns the loss of Capt. Rios, a courageous firefighter and committed public servant. His dedication to the Houston Fire Department will always be remembered,” said Mayor John Whitmire. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family during this difficult time.”
