The whispers started softly, a rustle in the art supply aisle, a shimmer in the crayon box. Kids, and even some grown-ups with a nostalgic glint in their eyes, were noticing something… different. It wasn't just a new box of crayons; it was a reunion. Crayola, responding to years of passionate pleas from fans, was bringing back some iconic colors from retirement.

Dandelion, the sunny yellow that had brightened countless childhoods before its retirement in 2017, was leading the charge. Its absence had been deeply felt, sparking an outpouring of fan requests for its return. And it wasn't coming alone. Joining Dandelion were seven other cherished hues: Blizzard Blue, Magic Mint, and Mulberry (retired in 2003), along with Orange Red, Violet Blue, Lemon Yellow, and Raw Umber (retired way back in 1990). These eight colors, a nod to Crayola's first iconic eight-crayon box launched in 1903, were back for a limited time.
"As a first in the history of Crayola, we could not be more excited to bring back this beloved Limited Edition color collection that will give kids even more opportunities to colorfully put their imagination into action," says Victoria Lozano, Chief Marketing Officer. "Color has such a personal connection for kids of all ages. It plays a pivotal role in inspiring creativity, which is an integral catalyst for educational, emotional and cognitive growth. At Crayola, we celebrate the enduring value of childhood creativity to help kids reach their full potential, and we look forward to seeing the Limited Edition colors inspire even more creative moments for our fans.”
The Limited Edition Retired Colors 8-Count Crayon Pack was just the beginning. Crayola also introduced Limited Edition Collection Colored Pencil and Limited Edition Collection Marker packs, giving fans even more ways to experience these classic colors.
The return wasn't just about nostalgia; it was about sparking creativity. A recent Crayola survey, in partnership with the Ad Council Research Institute, revealed that nine in ten parents believe color significantly impacts creativity and is vital to a child's development. With these returning colors, Crayola aimed to fuel that creative fire.
The excitement extended beyond the art supply aisle. Crayola partnered with brands like Lee, Caboodles, and S'well to create custom products inspired by the Limited Edition colors, further amplifying the celebration.
Throughout 2025, the limited edition retired color collection will be available in various products, including crayons, markers, colored pencils, activity kits, and themed coloring books at most national retailers. And, as a special treat, Crayola promised additional Limited Edition Collection "surprises" throughout the year, especially during key moments like back-to-school and the holidays. The message was clear: get ready for a year bursting with color, a year where classic hues returned to inspire a new generation of artists.
